Cosmological Position
The Hunting Hour occupies the boundary between the Warren's deep sky influence and the mortal world's upper atmosphere — the zone where Warren pressure bleeds upward into the night sky. Most celestial forces find this zone uninteresting (too wild, too close to Warren turbulence). Most Warren denizens find it uninteresting (too close to mortal scale, too thin). The Hunting Hour inhabits this neglected zone, which is partly why their eclipse was easier to engineer and harder to notice.
They are not Celestial in the way of the founding cosmic architecture. They are older than the current order in some respects, newer in others. The current Celestial structure does not formally recognize them. They do not require recognition.
Their domain is specific: sight in darkness — the predator's moment before decisive action, the clarity that arrives when panic in others would be rational. They are not a deity of darkness; darkness is simply the condition in which their gift is most visible. Their champions see when others cannot, in the literal sense and the broader one.
The Hunting Hour recognized Vaghri as natural champion-people — their vertical pupils, rotating ears, instinctive threat-reading, and cultural practice of full accurate perception (being seen). The oldest Seraph lineages under this patron were almost entirely Vaghri. This is not ancient history; it is a pattern that reasserts itself.
What They Know / What They Want
- The shape of every predator-prey relationship operating in the cosmological landscape — what hunts, what is hunted, and what that dynamic reveals about Warren pressure - The disturbance pattern in the night sky created by the Held Breath's semi-awakening — they see the turbulence, not the thing itself, but they have been watching it longer than any currently active figure in the cosmological landscape - Something specific about the eclipse event and who engineered it — this knowledge cannot be made credible while they remain eclipsed
Champions who do not flinch. In the immediate term: Ariel — her presence, her refusal to look away, her willingness to inhabit the dark hours as her native element. In the longer term: restoration of their visibility, through whatever mechanism Ariel's story eventually makes possible. They will not name this second goal to Ariel directly. They will show her what needs to be seen and let her draw her own conclusions.
Intervention Style
Works entirely through Ariel. No temple network, no priests, no institutional presence, no divine mandate that other cosmic players acknowledge. This is not reluctance — it is a consequence of the eclipse.
- The moment when a room reads completely and without effort — faster and more total than Ariel's own perception normally operates - The cold certainty that arrives before action, stilling thought into clarity - The quality, in enemies and bystanders, of being perceived by something that sees everything, all the time, without exception
Her own sight can be surprised. The patron's cannot. When clarity arrives without the normal passage of reading-and-processing, that is the Hunting Hour attending. She has learned not to question it mid-action; she questions it afterward.
The patron does not speak. No visions, no messages, no verbal instruction. They direct attention — what they want Ariel to notice becomes the most vivid element in a given perceptual field. This is not compulsion. It is emphasis. The distinction matters and is sometimes tested.
What Heroes Can Access
Ariel specifically, through attunement:
- The Ethereal Visage — the awe and fear Ariel generates in flight is not purely her own presence. The patron is bleeding through her. The arrested stillness her enemies experience is the particular quality of being accurately perceived by something much larger than a person.
- Sight in conditions that blind others — literal darkness, but also the darkness of a confusing situation, a room full of competing claims, a moment of crisis when everyone else loses their read. The patron's gift does not require favorable conditions; it is most distinct in unfavorable ones.
- Eventually — access to the patron's pre-eclipse testimony: This unlocks as Ariel recovers her own memory. The patron's covered knowledge and Ariel's recovered past are the same kind of knowledge: things that happened and were obscured. Each layer Ariel uncovers makes the patron's older account more accessible to her.
The Hidden Thing
The Hunting Hour was eclipsed because they witnessed something — a moment when what is now obscured was temporarily visible, and their testimony would have been credible to the Celestial structure if they had remained manifest.
Their eclipse was not cosmic accident or the consequence of hubris. It was deliberate intervention by a party that did not want that testimony on the record. The patron cannot identify who from inside the eclipse; eclipse conditions do not afford that kind of external sight.
What they witnessed is connected to the Held Breath's current condition — specifically, to the question of whether what is now called "the current cosmological order" was established cleanly or at a cost that was subsequently obscured.
She is a witness with divine standing who cannot look away. The patron does not need more power. They need a witness capable of making their testimony credible in the current order — by recovering the capacity to stand before that order and say: I was present. I saw it. I did not look away.
The parallel is not coincidence. The patron's condition — covered witness, waiting for a mechanism to surface a testimony — mirrors Ariel's own condition: a champion who has forgotten her past and is recovering it through action. This is the reason she was chosen.
Act II pivot. Do not surface the eclipse's cause or the testimony's content before Ariel has recovered enough of her own past to recognize the parallel between her condition and the patron's.
GM Notes
Initial state — update as campaign progresses.
The Hunting Hour should never feel warm. Present through precision: moments when Ariel's read on a room is faster than it should be, when fear arrives in enemies before she has done anything, when a decision that should be difficult cuts cleanly. The patron's presence is what it feels like to be perceived by something that sees everything, all the time, without exception. Their absence — when Ariel's sight fails or is deceived — should register as conspicuous.
Arc triggers:
- First significant combat with Ethereal Visage: Play enemy fear as recognition, not just intimidation. Something in them responds to what Ariel carries before they've processed her as a threat.
- First time Ariel is deceived or her sight fails: The patron's absence is notable. She has become accustomed to clarity arriving. When it doesn't, the gap is information.
- Act II — memory recovery milestone: When Ariel begins asking questions about who she was before Hero Heaven, the eclipse thread opens. The parallel between her condition and the patron's is the unlock mechanism.
Rill has a patron relationship of their own (Keeper / Warlock). The two patron relationships are structurally distinct — one transactional, one perceptual. The contrast is worth developing once both are established in play. Do not draw the comparison before then.
Three options were developed and presented to Marc; this was chosen. The full options analysis is preserved in the player-facing artifact. A record of the GM-side reasoning is in narrative/gm_secrets/divine-players/ariel-patron-options.
